Tame a companion
- Get the taming item for the creature you want. Each tameable monster has its own lure, and Asterveil offers the classic set, from Poring to Alice.
- Use the taming item on that monster. The item is used up whether or not the attempt succeeds, so choose a calm moment.
- A tamed monster turns into its egg in your bag. It does not give experience or loot.
- Buy a Pet Incubator from a Pet Groomer, who also sells pet food and some accessories. Use the egg while the incubator is in your bag to hatch your pet; both are used up.
Feeding and loyalty
Your pet follows you across maps. Right-click it for its menu: Pet information, Feed, Performance and Return to egg. Left-clicking a pet never opens anything, so you will not interrupt a fight by accident.
Pets grow hungry over time. Feed them their favourite food when the Pet Info window says they are hungry. Overfeeding a full pet upsets it, and neglect costs intimacy. Your own deaths also strain the bond.
Intimacy runs from Awkward through Shy, Neutral and Cordial to Loyal. A Loyal pet grants its species' classic bonus while it is out. A pet left hungry for too long eventually runs away for good.
Grilled Fish from Angler Maren at the Fishing Guild in Alberta, and the cooks' Honeyed Fish Treat, are treats any pet eats before its usual food, for more intimacy than its usual meal. Overfeeding rules still apply.
A name and an accessory
Open Pet information and choose Command, then Rename, to give your pet its own name. Each pet can be named once, so choose carefully.
Many pets have a classic accessory, such as a backpack, ribbon or mask. Carry it and choose Equip accessory from the pet's menu or the Pet Info window to dress your pet; the outfit is visible to other players. Unequip it to return the accessory to your bag.
Who the bond belongs to
Your pet's bond is kept by your character for that species. Trading an egg does not trade the intimacy you built: the new owner starts their own bond.
Pets do not fight and cannot be attacked. They are separate from your Hearthling soul companion, Summoner spirits, homunculi and mercenaries.
