While your soul is watching

Your Hearthling companion follows you, by default as a visible animated spirit. In this state, its rescue is available. If you die, it carries you back to a safe settlement and enters your body. This begins possession; it is not a free revival on the battlefield.

Twenty-four real hours

Possession lasts 24 real hours from the rescue, including time spent offline. Logging out, changing maps, or a server restart does not reset that deadline.

While possessed, you receive +5 STR, AGI, VIT, INT, DEX, and LUK, plus +100 maximum HP and +50 maximum SP. The flat HP and SP are in addition to benefits derived from the increased stats.

Your companion no longer follows outside your body. Check the journal and HUD for the remaining time.

When the time runs out

At the end of the possession period, your soul can emerge and protect you again. A later death begins a new 24-hour possession period.

Wait for the in-game soul state to show that a rescue is available. Do not estimate safety from the time on a second device.

What permanent death means

  • The fallen character is archived and no longer playable.
  • The character's name is reserved as part of its record.
  • The character slot is freed so you can create another traveler.
  • Carried items, equipped gear, and cart contents do not transfer to your next character.
  • Account-level storage remains account-level storage.
  • A new character receives a new soul and does not inherit the fallen character's embers or seals.

There is no resurrection loophole

Normal respawning, priest Resurrection, relogging, or waiting for a timer to end cannot restore a permanently fallen character. Offerings cannot buy an extra rescue or shorten possession.

The rules also apply to admin characters. Testing a dangerous encounter on an admin character is not a death-free practice mode.

Names are not forgotten

The journal memorial remembers fallen characters on your account. It can show up to sixteen names, arranged alphabetically. Their lives end, but their records are not silently erased.
